When historians look back at the turn of the 21st century, they will, no doubt, liken it to the last days of Rome. There will be major differences between the two, however.
In the final days of the Roman Republic there were statesmen who feared for the direction of politics. While the wise words of Cicero were not heeded at the time, we have his words for posterity, and they are magnificent examples of oratory.

We have Howard Dean, who flubs his words trying to make a point of about the Stars-and-Bars.

Ah, Marcus Tullius, quondo tui verbi auscultabimus: nervos belli, pecuniam infinitam.
